In an era of heightened scrutiny, expansive expectations, and lingering economic uncertainty, the need for sound financial management amongst both corporations and the private sector is presumably at an all-time high. Managerial finance, at its core, deals not specifically with the accounting and calculation of a company’s financial data, but rather the analysis and expectation of how that information affects the firm or entity both in the present and moving forward.

The typical master’s degree in banking and financial management will be of the Master of Science variety. Employment and job growth for the managerial finance industry is expected to grow in accordance with the average for all occupations, with jobs increasing by about 8 percent over the next decade. Prospective job candidates will face heavy competition for openings; although those with master’s degrees will be in prime position for hiring.

While duties will vary among each, those who obtain an MS in banking and financial management will be well suited to become corporate controllers, treasurers, or finance officers. Managerial opportunities are credit managers, cash managers, risk managers, and international banking mangers are also present with such educational advancement. The median salary for managerial finance executives (excluding bonuses, stock options, and other auxiliary compensation) was just short of six figures, at $99,300 annually.

Requirements for Earning this Degree

Coursework including in a MS in banking and financial management program includes managerial accounting, finance for leadership, project management, and an examination of strategic planning and public policy. Professional and organizational ethics also plays a key role in the curriculum for such a program, examining how relationships develop amongst an organization’s stakeholders, and how the organization can succeed at keeping those relationships positive, yet ethically balanced. As with most Master of Science programs, a bachelor’s degree – preferably in a related mathematics or business-oriented field – is required.
