Master’s in Healthcare Management

Healthcare management, also referred to as healthcare administration, encompasses the leadership, management and administration of virtually any healthcare system currently in place in the United States. Leadership and guidance of hospitals, urgent care facilities, private medical practices, in-home care organizations, nursing facilities, and more are included, with healthcare administrators considered to be healthcare professionals.

Career Opportunities with this Degree

A master’s in healthcare management degree is typically offered in one of two fashions: as a master of business administration, with a specialization in healthcare management, or as a master of science in healthcare administration. Either degree will lead to significantly greater opportunity for advancement as a medical or health services manager. As hospitals, general practices, and other medical organizations throughout the United States work toward improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare offerings, job prospects for potential healthcare managers are positive. Employment is projected to grow faster than average, or by 16 percent over the 10-year-period ending 2018.

Requirements for Earning this Degree

While both programs require a bachelor’s degree for admission, the MS in management with a concentration in healthcare administration generally offers coursework in organizational management and leadership, ethical issues in healthcare, strategic planning and policy for healthcare, and managing projects for organizations. Similarly, MBA students will study strategic management, managerial marketing, health policy, and healthcare strategies.
